Purpose:

Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization. This individual placement is in partnership with the National Park Service and is an AmeriCorps Position. SECC empowers young adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and grit through community service and environmental stewardship. SECC selects young adults, ages 18-30, to complete conservation projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning.

USFS: The phrase, “Caring for the Land and Serving People,” captures the Forest Service mission. As set forth in law, the mission is to achieve quality land management under the sustainable multiple-use management concept to meet the needs of people.

The Heritage Program of the Daniel Boone National Forest is dedicated to protecting and preserving cultural resources while ensuring forest projects can move forward in a timely manner. Archaeologists service on a variety of projects related to vegetation and fuels management, recreation, and utilities.

Position Overview:

The individual placement (IP) will assist the forest in meeting our outstanding curation obligations for legacy archaeological collections dating back 40+ years, as outlined in 36 CFR 79. This IP will initially be trained by USFS archaeologists in the standard and acceptable curation methods of the William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology, the current federal repository for archaeological materials in the state of Kentucky. The IP may also assist, as able, with field service across the forest – field siervice includes surveying and recording archaeological sites. This project assists with improving various ecosystems, as one of the prior steps to project implementation on USFS lands is an archaeological review.

Description of Duties:

Assist with Curation of Legacy Projects on DBNF

• Assist USFS archaeologists with curation of legacy artifacts.

• Maintain records and databases of USFS archaeological collections.

• Assist with the transfer of artifacts from DBNF district offices to the final repository, at the William S Webb Museum of Anthropology in Lexington, KY.

Assist with Curation of Legacy Projects on DBNF

• Assist USFS archaeologists with tracking archaeological sites and isolated finds spreadsheets

• Assist with the management of USFS Databases

• Enter pertinent site and project information into the USFS NRM database

• Assist with verifying and updating current geodatabases.

Archaeological Field Service Across DBNF

• Assist USFS archaeologists in relocation and monitoring of sensitive archaeological resources, survey of project areas for archaeological sites.

• Assist with pre-field preparation and planning.

• Relocation and recording of cultural resources

• Assist with post-field paperwork and data processing.

Potential environmental/human risk involved with this term of service: Long periods of sitting or standing, heavy lifting of boxes up to 50 pounds, for field service, uneven terrain, hiking off-trail/unmarked paths, slippery/wet conditions, inclement weather, and possible animal/plant/insect interactions. Long periods of sitting or standing, eyestrain due to extended computer use, and heavy lifting of boxes up to 50 pounds

Qualifications:

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien

• At least 18 years of age

• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent before using the education award

• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check

• Valid Driver’s License

• Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field.

• Previous experience with curation preferred but not required.

Transportation:

A personal vehicle is required due to the limited public transportation and rural character of this location. USFS/SECC vehicles will be provided for transportation only for forest capacity. This Individual Placement must be a driver.

Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week – but exact service schedules may vary and may include evening and weekend service depending on project needs. A half-hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

• Members will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

• Standard treatment of artifacts and curation methods, safety training for office and field service. Archaeological survey and recording techniques.

• Safety training for office and field service, use of internal spreadsheets and databases

• USFS AgLearn Defensive Driving course, as well as an in-person driving test for forest roads to gauge and assess comfort level in driving on often rough and unpaved forest roads.

Benefits:

• Segal AmeriCorps Education Award : $3,97.50

• Living Allowance : $500 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to:

• Bi-weekly timesheets

• Monthly Accomplishment Report

• Narrative Monthly Report.

• Bi-Monthly Check-Ins

• Midterm and Final Evals

• Exiting Task

In accordance with a drug-free environment, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and program activities and while on organization property.
