Counselor

Muskingum University invites applications for a counselor in our Counseling Center. This position provides specialized mental health counseling and developmental support for students with learning differences and those on the autism spectrum.  The counselor delivers faculty, staff, and student training and collaborates closely with the PLUS program, Disability Resources Services, faculty, Student Experience, and other staff to ensure a coordinated, holistic approach to student success.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide individual and group counseling services to neurodivergent students (e.g., those with autism, ADHD, learning differences, and sensory processing differences), with an emphasis on anxiety management, executive functioning, and adjustment to college life  
  • Provide clinical services, including psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and consultation 
  • Psychoeducational responsibilities include developing and implementing an experiential curriculum focused on social skills, communication, and emotional awareness that support student persistence, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and social integration. 
  • Develop and implement structured interventions related to time management, organization, and self-advocacy  
  • Support students in navigating social relationships, conflict resolution, and campus expectations 
  • Provide crisis intervention, clinical triage, case management, and referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources 
  • Collaborate with the PLUS Program team and Student Experience staff to coordinate care plans  
  • Provide psychoeducational workshops on topics such as coping strategies, resilience, and social skills  
  • Assist students in understanding and adhering to institutional policies, including community standards and Title IX expectations  
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in compliance with ethical and legal standards (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA as applicable)  
  • Monitor trends in student utilization and contribute to program assessment and continuous improvement  
  • Provide consultation to the university community regarding psychological and developmental needs of neurodivergent students

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field  
  • Licensure or license-eligibility in the state of Ohio (e.g., LPC, LPCC, LISW)  
  • Experience working with neurodivergent populations, including autism spectrum and learning differences  
  • Demonstrated ability to support executive functioning development and transition-to-college challenges
