Job Summary

The Financial Trader supports ConocoPhillips' financial natural gas trading activity across U.S. markets, helping manage price risk, support physical and origination activity, and build durable commercial capability over time.
This role is part of a disciplined, asset‑aware commercial organization focused on execution quality, risk management, and long‑term value creation-not short‑term speculative trading. The position provides reliable market coverage and execution support, particularly during bid weeks and periods of heightened volatility, while contributing to the ongoing development of regional trading portfolios.
As market activity and physical flows expand, this role offers opportunities to take on deeper ownership of regional financial exposure and grow alongside a stable, well‑governed trading platform.

Position Overview

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Executing financial natural gas trades, including futures, swaps, and basis products, within approved limits and governance frameworks.
  • Trading prompt and short‑dated forward markets across multiple U.S. natural gas hubs.
  • Providing execution support during bid weeks and other periods of elevated market activity.
  • Supporting the management of basis, spread, and forward curve risk associated with existing and emerging portfolio exposure.
  • Assisting with monetization of forward positions as liquidity and market depth develop.
  • Monitoring regional natural gas fundamentals, including pipeline constraints, storage dynamics, demand trends, and weather impacts.
  • Analyzing curve structure, spreads, and relative‑value relationships across U.S. natural gas markets.
  • Contributing to trade idea development through correlation analysis and market intelligence.
  • Accurately capturing trades and maintaining position, profit and loss (P&L), and exposure reporting in line with compliance standards.
  • Escalating material market movements and risk issues in a timely and transparent manner.
  • Collaborating closely with physical traders, schedulers, and origination teams as commercial activity scales.
  • Sharing market insights across regions and providing coverage support as needed.

Success Profile:

  • Takes Accountability - Takes ownership of actions and commitments, ensuring ethical and timely decisions
  • Partners Collaboratively - Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
  • Makes Decisions - Builds effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical

Basic requirements:

  • 1 or more year of experience as a trader or market analyst.
  • Experience supporting bid‑week activity and short‑dated financial products.
  • Knowledge of natural gas derivatives, basis markets, and forward curves.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret market fundamentals and price relationships.
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to work bid week, after hours, weekends and holidays as needed.
Preferred requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, related field, or foreign equivalent.
  • Experience operating in less liquid or developing markets.
  • Exposure to one or more U.S. natural gas regions (e.g., Eastern, Western, or Central markets).
  • A team‑oriented approach and comfort operating without an individual profit‑and‑loss mandate.
  • Clear communication skills and a strong commitment to risk management and compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance opportunity identification with downside risk protection.
  • Interest in growing into deeper regional or multi‑region trading ownership over time.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • This role is based in a professional office environment.
  • Prolonged periods of screen‑based work and market monitoring are required.
  • Work hours may vary during bid weeks or periods of elevated market volatility.
