Job Description

SENIOR DESIGNER POSITION

Studio Becky Carter is seeking an experienced Senior Designer who can confidently lead a small design team through complex, full-scope projects from the earliest conceptual conversations through final installation. This is a role for a true design leader; someone who is equally comfortable developing original architectural and interior concepts, managing the countless moving pieces of a project, and shifting seamlessly between creative exploration and technical execution in a team setting.

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful collaborator who enjoys iterating on ideas, contributing original design solutions, and partnering closely with the Principal to elevate the work. Just as importantly, they are exceptionally organized, proactive, and resourceful, with the ability to establish structure, prioritize competing demands, and maintain momentum across multiple projects without sacrificing quality or attention to detail. They understand outstanding design depends as much on communication, planning, and sound judgment as it does on creativity, and they take pride in creating an organized process that allows projects to progress with clarity rather than urgency.

This is an opportunity to serve as the day-to-day leader on sophisticated residential and hospitality projects, building trusted relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and fabricators while helping shape interiors that are architecturally grounded, thoughtfully detailed, and distinctly original.

Applicants whose experience has primarily been in a supporting or production role are unlikely to be a fit. Note: You must have previously held a Senior Designer position to apply.

  • Position structure: This role begins as a four-day-per-week contract role during a 90-day trial period, compensated at an hourly rate. Following the trial period, and contingent on mutual fit / performance review, the role transitions to a full-time, salaried position with benefits.
  • Location: Hybrid, based in our Brooklyn studio. Four days per week in-studio, Fridays WFH.
  • Compensation: $95,000-$135,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

About Studio Becky Carter

Studio Becky Carter creates modernist, retro-futuristic, warm, colorful, unexpected, and architecturally interesting designs. Designers we admire include: Giancarlo Valle, Pierre Yovanovich, Reath Design, Jessica Helgerson, and Studio Shamshiri, to name a few.

Our studio culture is equal parts highly productive and healthy, focused and chatty. We’re professional, but not uptight. Independent, but always down to help one another. We deliver high output, but make it look and feel easy, and we usually leave the office by 6:15pm. We’re fully integrated into the NY design culture, maintaining relationships with industry peers, paying close attention to emerging artists and designers. Throughout the year, we attend fairs, industry dinners, antique markets, and gallery openings. Basically, we love what we do and we have fun doing it together.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in high-end interior design, including at least 4 years in a Senior Designer or equivalent project leadership role.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, and Google Workspace.
  • Experience with

  • Experience leading client meetings, coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams, and managing contractor relationships.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff, reviewing technical work, and maintaining accountability for project outcomes.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual thinking, thoughtful detailing, architectural sensitivity, and original design solutions.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience within a boutique, full-service interior design studio is strongly preferred.
  • Must be based in the New York City area and legally authorized to work in the United States.
